This ceramic vessel is composed of stoneware pottery, a term for pottery fired at high temperatures, and is decorated in a Hagi ware glaze. Hagi ware is an invention of Korean potters that worked in the town of Hagi in the Yamaguchi prefecture on the coast of Japan’s sea in the 16th century following the invasion of Korea by Japan. The Saka family was one of those first Korean families that had a hand in first establishing the tradition and style of Hagi ware or Hagi yaki in 1604.
This hagiware chawan bowl has come to us from a collection of important Japanese ceramics and ceremonial teaware. This object is presented underside with customary Japanese porcelain marks or artist seals. The presentation pine box also with artist information and valid documentation on the origin of this vessel. This ceramic vessel is decorated in a colorful array of purples, lavender, pinks, and lavender creams over a crackle-style glaze similar to the texture of some examples of Japanese raku ware. This Japanese tea bowl is stamped with the studio stamp of the artisan Saka Koraizaemon (1949-2000) on the underside of the bowl and dates to the Showa Period period.
