Product Information
Bernard Leach (1887-1979) was a British potter and writer who is widely considered to be the father of British studio pottery. He was born in Hong Kong but moved to England as a child and later studied pottery in Japan. Leach’s work was heavily influenced by traditional Japanese pottery techniques and aesthetics, and he is known for his simple, functional pottery that is fired in a wood-fired kiln. Leach’s pottery is highly regarded and has been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world. Bernard Leach studied with Shoji Hamada in Japan and learned traditional Japanese pottery techniques from him. Leach first traveled to Japan in 1909, where he studied pottery and worked as an apprentice to a Japanese potter. In 1920, Leach met Hamada, and the two became close friends and colleagues. Hamada became a mentor to Leach and taught him the art of making traditional Japanese ceramics.
Leach later returned to England, where he established the Leach Pottery in St. Ives, Cornwall, and continued to make pottery in the Japanese style. He also wrote extensively about pottery and his experiences in Japan, and his books have become important texts for potters and ceramic enthusiasts around the world. This very unique and rare set of four Celedon glazed circular dishes and wooden rack dates to the year 1950. The stand, possibly also made by Leach, is exceptionally rare and appears to have been made for this set of four dishes. This is an exquisite example of Leach’s simplicity and modernist sophistication in this studio pottery work, which is also exceptionally unique and decorative. Each dish includes a Leach signature seal stamp on the side edge rim and was acquired circa 1950 in England.
