							Product Information
The Meiji period in Japan, which lasted from 1868 to 1912, saw a resurgence in traditional Japanese art forms such as cloisonne. Cloisonne is a technique for decorating metal objects with enamel, in which thin metal wires are fused to the surface of the object to create compartments that are filled with enamel. During the Meiji period, Japanese cloisonné became highly prized for its intricate designs and vibrant colors. The Meiji government actively encouraged the production of Japanese cloisonne as a way to promote the country’s traditional arts and crafts, and many artisans began creating new designs and experimenting with new techniques. This pair of matching cloisonne vases are a fine example of this craft. Each with intricate detail of birds among flowers and botanicals. The vases date to the late Meiji period, circa 1890-1900.
