Japanese Table Centerpiece

This Japanese stoneware centerpiece by Mingei ceramic artist Yosuke Haruta follows the tenmoku glaze tradition in line with the vessells and ceramics of the ceramic artist Shoji Hamada. Osaka, Japan artist Haruta was greatly influenced by ceramic artists and potters from the area of Mashiko. Led by Otsuka Keizaburo, the founder of the Mashiko ware style, Mashito is an area known for its importance in creating Japanese ceramics due to the unusual red clay that the land uses produced.

The area of Mashiko was also famous for its connection to Shoji Hamada and the Mingei art movement as Hamada practiced his art there during the early 20th century. This vessel, part of the field of Japanese contemporary ceramics or Japanese studio art pottery, is presented in the form of a basket and handle. This versatile centerpiece allows for various arrangements, such as using it as a fruit bowl, for flowers, plants, or for fragrant dried organic materials like potpourri. The underside of this vessel is signed Yosuke Haruta ad displays a collage of colors in a wash of reds, tans, and black wash.

The vessel measures 15.25 inches in height and measures 14 inches long.
