This 19th century United States postal cover and stamp feature an 1864 U.S. George Washington 3 cent stamp from the Scott catalog #65. The cover is marked Bridgewater, Vt, and is also marked with a Jersey City, N.J. black ink stamp with 1864. This collectible stamp of George Washington, the 3 cent stamp, was produced by the National Bank Note Company. National Bank Note produced U.S. stamps from 1861-1872.
The National Bank Note Company was formed from the merger of seven printing and engraving companies, and many saw this as an attempt to create a monopoly within the industry. The National Bank Note Company was also comprised of the most exceptional talents in the nation.
