The Moss Fragrance Garden, or ‘苔香園’, holds a significant place in the annals of Japanese history. Established in 1878 by Uchiyama Chotaro, a prominent nurseryman, the garden graced the landscapes of Kudan-zaka. It came into existence following Uchiyama’s esteemed work on the landscaping of the YÅ«shÅ«kan, now famously known as the Yasukuni Shrine. Entrusted to the visionary Kibe Yonekichi, the garden saw an amalgamation of modern techniques with the age-old Edo-period ‘tako-zukuri’ bonsai styling. Yonekichi’s innovative approach involved wrapping tree branches with copper wire, a technique that has since become a staple in modern bonsai art. This original woodblock print dates to 1881 od the Meiji Era, and is a rare antique Japanese woodblock by two masters of Ukiyo-e art.
