Lippincott (1849-1920) was primarily known for his landscape paintings and formally trained and made his living as a professional portrait artist. The French Barbizon school painters greatly influenced him due to his time and study in France under French painter Leon Bonnat (1833–1922), a professor at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts.
