Chaplin West Virginia old barn photograph by American FSA (Farm Security Administration) photographer Marion Post Wolcott (1910-1990). This gelatin silver print photograph is titled “Playing in an old deserted barn on hill near mines, Chaplin, West Virginia ” through the Farm Security Administration’s records – Office of War Information Photograph Collection (Library of Congress) and dates to September 1938.

Library of congress number LC-USF33- 030205-M3 [P&P] LOT 1729. This gelatin silver print photograph by Marion Post Wolcott dates to the 1960-1970s. The photograph’s reverse is stamped “Reproduced from the Collections of the Library of Congress” with a handwritten pencil inscription on the reverse of the sheet “Sept 38 M.P. Wolcott. Deserted barn on a hill near mines Chaplin W. Va.” Marion Post Wolcott is most well known for her association with the FSA-Farm Security Administration photographers and the photographs she produced for them from 1938 to 1942. This black and white photograph by Marion Wolcott of a boy playing in an old barn was part of her portfolio of photographs taken of the mining communities in and around West Virginia.


The photograph measures 8 x 10 inches. The image measures 6.45 x 9.45 inches


The photograph displays circular edge loss to the margin edges. The photograph surface displays minor abrasions and surface imperfections with markings and pencil notations on the sheet’s reverse.
