Gothic Cross Drawing

Dated to the 18th century, this old British drawing depicts a magnificent Gothic architectural ornament of Jesus on the cross. The lower corner of the picture in the medium of ink and graphite on paper is inscribed “Croxden Abbey Staffordshire.” The abbey known as Abbey of the Vale of St. Mary at Croxden. This Cistercian abbey at Croxden, Staffordshire, was founded by Bertram III de Verdun of Alton Castle, Staffordshire, in the 12th century. The monastery was dismantled in 1538. The site now exists as a historic ruin in the English countryside. It is believed that this sketch of this ornamental iconography of Christ on the cross may not remain as part of the structure, perhaps falling to disrepair or theft during the past several hundred years. The reverse of the drawing further displays additional gothic architectural elements in the sketch form.
