This charming pair of oil on board landscapes each depicts vibrant landscape scenes, stylistically in line with other, seemly rare examples of priors landscape paintings. Known mostly for his portraits, priors landscape paintings take on the same energetic and animated colorful qualities of his more well-known portraits of Children and women.
Dated 1823, these portraits would have been painted by Prior the first year he had started painting at the age of 17. While the process of authentication is not always verifiable with works of this work, we state the works are attributed to Mr. Prior with a signature of the artist located on the reverse of one panel, as pictured, the other reverse panel, unsigned and undated/ The signed panel with a date of 1823. Based on the traits of these paintings, they do appear to be of the period and 19th century inline with the inscribed date and in line with other examples of signatures by Mr. Prior.
These lively and charming paintings are wonderful expressions of early American folk art paintings and welcome addition for anyone that collects American folk art. These paintings would be a welcome addition for anyone looking to buy genuine folk art for their inspired interior in the style of farmhouse decor, country house, or cottage style interiors. These paintings were acquired through a New England collection of American folk art.
