Chinese jade chilong bi disc. The circular jade gemstone bi is carved in relief with a developed figural hornless dragon chilong and raised openwork nodes, and the reverse of the disc features carving with incised archaic geometric lines. The jade gemstone stone is of a mottled dark grey tone with paler grey inclusions and striations. Bi discs are a type of circular ancient Chinese jade artifact.
The earliest bi were produced during the Neolithic period and developed by the Liangzhu culture. Many examples date from the Shang, Zhou, and Han dynasties; however, they were produced during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The symbol of the Chilong, one of the four divine animals dragons, symbolizes a hornless dragon. Chinese dragon, also known as Loong, Long, or Lung, is a legendary creature that symbolizes power, strength, and good luck.
