In particular, his paintings and sketches of the desert have made him famous, and art critic Donald Kuspit has referred to him as “one of the most prominent modern landscape artists.”

Painter and printer Letterio Calapai (1902–1993) was a realist painter and printmaker who worked with the Works Progress Administration’s Federal Arts Project, which took place throughout the 1930s. In addition to the Fogg Art Museum and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. He influenced a generation of printmakers and referenced in several original artwork and prints during the 1960s and 1970s.
