Inscribed “Tomb of John of Etham, Earl of Cornwall In the chapel of Saint Edmund, Westminster Abbey,” this intricate double-sided drawing and watercolor serves as an architectural study.
The tomb itself encases the body of Prince John of Eltham. He was buried in Westminster Abbey on January 13th of the year 1337. The tomb itself was commissioned by Edward III and consisted of an intricate white alabaster monument that was and remained placed in St. Edmunds Chapel within Westminster Abbey.
The monument itself depicts John dressed in armor with a sword and a shield with high relief carved coat of arms of three lions representing England and a border of the fleur de lis symbols. The figure is further ornamented with angels, and a lion lies at the body’s feet, representing loyalty and power with additional gothic architectural elements. The reverse of the drawing retains a partial and unfinished watercolor study detailing an architectural landscape.
