Dated to the 18th-19th century, this original unsigned British school drawing is attributed to the British royal artist John Constable. While the drawing is not signed, the work comes to us with an inscription stating the work was acquired through Christie’s in London, circa 1959-1960 on the period reverse of the drawings matting.
Such artist studies and sketches are not signed, while some of the Constables’ sketches and drawings are signed and dated a fair number of his known examples in such revered institutions as the Tate museums and notable auction houses also do not include signature or date providing a catalog of works unsigned but stated as to be by the artist or attributed to the artist. A term used to reference works that are possibly by an artist, however, unsigned. This work, while attributed, is in line with known examples of Constables’ artwork and drawings and also correlates to being of the period circa 18th-19th century.
Constable’s artwork had a fascination with tree’s and the buoyant robust and regal organic nature of their form and statue. As such, more complete examples such as the work “An Ash Tree” currently with the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. This graphite pencil on paper takes us through an artist’s understanding of the undulating and unpredictable lines of nature. Birds sit in a hurried manner on the barren branches, creating a brief but pleasurable window into the mind of 18th-19th century British artist. This work comes to us from a Northeast art collection.
