African Musicians Photograph

$374.95

By Adelphoi Zangak, Langahi Late 19th century

This African musician’s photograph for sale dates to the late 19th century, circa 1870-1890. The image was taken by the 19th-century Greek photographers known as Langahi, Adelphoi Zangaki, or the Brothers Zangaki, who were active from the 1860s-1890s in Egypt and Algeria. The Zangaki brothers specialized in photographing monuments, daily life scenes, and some of the first large scale images of pyramids in Egypt.

This image shows two gentlemen, one with a large African stringed instrument and the other in a dancer’s pose looking upwards with goat hoof rattles or shakers affixed to his belt. Lengahi or the brothers Zangaki’s photographs of Africa and Egypt’s countries are of the most prominent distinction. The print an original albumen format photograph displays rich tones and at the base of the image the inscription “Danse de Loudan, No. 598.” This rich and expressive image is a fantastic photograph of the photographic collection of early European exploration images and travel through Asia, African, Southeast Asia, and India throughout the 19th century by noted artists such as Langahi, Bonfils, Espositio, Fenton, and Robertson.

This is a wonderfully rich image for anyone looking for an element of history, travel, and travel of the old world. A richly saturated image, this expressive and dynamic 19th-century albumen photograph will add a unique element to your wall decor in the spirit of travel and adventure.
