Frans Wildenhain (1905-1980) was a German potter who emigrated to the United States in the 1920s. He is best known for his work at the Bauhaus, where he studied from 1924 to 1929. After leaving the Bauhaus, Wildenhain established his own studio in New York City. He continued to produce pottery and teach at the School of American Craftsman until his retirement. Wildenhain’s ceramics and artwork are distinctive for their modernist experimental approaches to technicals, forms, and styles. Simple forms and decoration characterize Wildenhain’s work. His pieces are often miniature in scale and delicate in construction. This unique and large vase is a departure from his typical style. His Glazes are usually high-fired and sometimes enhanced with copper or cobalt blues—a true leader in the mid-century modern movement.
