Shop this three wise men abstract art print for sale, dating to the 1960s. This original artist, signed and entitled etching by American artist David Ruff 1925-2007, is entitled “three men” and alludes to the biblical narrative of the Three Wise Men in the story of Biblical Magi. Balthasar, Melchior, and Gaspar are the names by which they are most widely known (or Casper). Several kings of Arabia and Ethiopia have been depicted in the Western tradition, as have Melchior and Gaspar, who have been shown as kings of Persia and India. The etching is matted and retains gallery accession and catalog information.
Artist, printmaker and poet, David Ruff moved to San Francisco in 1945 after studying with Stanley William Hayter and working at Atelier 17 in New York from 1945 to 1950. He founded The Print Workshop (TPW), whose work over the next five years included handset limited editions of “Orchards, Thrones, and Caravans” by Kenneth Patchen; “Do Keep Thee in the Stoney Bowes,” “Stairwells, Marriages,” and “In the City of Sorrowing Clouds” by his The year 1955 marked David’s departure from San Francisco’s printing industry and return to the east coast’s painting industry. He went to Europe for the first time around ten years later, when he was in his forties. Following his retirement in 1969, he relocated to the Netherlands and then to the Italian Piedmont area, where he lived until his death in 2007.

The sheet measures 10.1 x 13.5 inches.
Condition
The print contains catalog pencil notations, abrasions, fading to the sheet, light staining, and toning, the sheet off margin unevenly cut. There is linen tape on the margin corner edges and some scuffs and stains on the matting.
