The artist, Gilbert Charles Stuart of Rhode Island, was a close friend of Penniman’s, and the two of them worked together as assistants until Stuart’s death in 1828.

The frame measures 17.25 inches by 14.25 inches; the board panel measures 13.1 inches by 10.25 inches.
Condition
The frame displays elements of in-painting, repair, and chipping to the gilt-decorated surface. The oil on board painting appears to have been cleaned, and most of the varnish appears to have been removed. The surface of the painting displays abrasions to the wooden panel, and the reverse of the painting retains several inventory stickers, including a label with a partial record of attribution.
